Biography
James is based in our Guangzhou office, handling all aspects of brand protection and enforcement programme management on behalf of international clients.
He has seven years’ experience in IP consulting, with his recent focus on China and the protection of IP rights on the Internet.
James has been based in China since 2015, leading the Online Team from September 2016 until June 2018, when he became the head of IP Protection team within the China Enforcement Group.
He has worked closely with a range of businesses, from start-ups to multinationals, in industries ranging from luxury goods, fast moving consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, electronics and software.
James’ main practice areas are online/offline enforcement programmes, anti-counterfeiting, adversary intelligence gathering, dispute resolution, litigation management, online monitoring and takedown, domain name recovery, trade fair enforcement and customs protection measures.
He has represented clients in mediations before the Chinese authorities and engaged in lobbying activities in support of foreign rightsholders in China.
James is also interested in advising clients on their China market entry strategy and the use of blockchain technology to secure evidence for IP disputes.
James joined Rouse in 2013 from his earlier role at a computer games company, where he was responsible for acquiring IP assets from major record companies and recording artists.
In addition to his extensive work with brands, James is also experienced in protecting and leveraging copyrights, design patents and utility models.
